The whisky had a sweeter flavor, one that was deeply honeyed, flavored with sandalwood, and just a little bit smokey. This Island single malt from Orkneys Highland Park distillery is the second in the Viking Legend series which began with Highland Park Valkyrie. The nose really draws some cues from the hue since it started with straw bales before moving on to ash, pepper, and a tinge of spice. A thick, tear-like coating and an oily layer were left behind after swishing the glass. Valknut appears straw-like and pale in hue in the glass. The whiskey, known as Valknut, was aged in casks made of American oak that had been seasoned with sherry and had a minor amount of spirit produced with Tartan barley that was farmed on the Orkney Islands. It was believed that the rune would call upon Odin, the Al-Father, to act as a guide for the souls of the deceased, which was not dissimilar to his function as the master of the Valkyries, who transported the honorable dead to Valhalla. The Valknut resembles three interlaced triangles, meaning "knot of those dead in the war."
Bottled at 52.9 percent ABV, the single malt is packed with notes of dark fruits, toasted nuts and spices, with just a gentle wisp of Orkney peat. There is a reason why "Valknut" sounds similar to "Valkyrie," which is the word's precursor in this Highland Park sequence.
